Biocidal Products
The European Parliament and the Council adopted the EU Biocidal Products Directive 98/8/EC in 1998. This established a single European market for biocides by introducing a harmonised authorisation system based on assessment of
- Risks to man
- Risks to the environment
- Efficacy of the product
Authorised active substances are added to Annex 1 of the Directive.
The BPD does not apply to industrial chemicals, plant protection products, human and veterinary medicines, medical devices or cosmetics as they are dealt with by separate European legislation.
